Kyson Reading

Reading is a core skill and unlocks a window on the world we live in. Since the introduction of a new national curriculum in 2014, the expected standard in primary school has risen with a particular focus on securing word reading skills earlier. In addition, there is a much greater emphasis on developing a deeper understanding of what is being read, the vocabulary being used and encouraging a love of reading.

As a school we are rising to these challenges and continually updating our practice to ensure that we teach reading skills as effectively as possible. This means that reading sessions in school may appear differently; either with a change of frequency or length of time, depending on the skills being taught.

You can find a copy of the new national curriculum below alongside assessment sheets used in school, detailing the kind of questions used to support learning. We really hope you will find this useful in encouraging learning at home and sharing a love of reading with your child.
